What can I record on?

This application is designed for use on the iPhone 3G, 3Gs, 4G, 4Gs, iPod and iPad models. Basically, it will work on any portable Apple device that can download an App, has a microphone and a touch screen.

We’re planning to release the app for other devices very soon. If you would be interested in downloading “Record Their Stories” to a non-Apple device, please register your interest by emailing us at feedback@recordtheirstories.com We will then let you know as soon as new versions are released.

How long can I record for?

Using the app for yourself, there is no limit to how long you can record for. However if you upload for our gift service, our standard prices cover recording up to 30 minutes.

Our unique ‘suggested questions’ prompt screen and ability to add your own questions means you can focus your interview just like a professional, so 30 minutes should be plenty of time to cover a lot of ground.

If you find this isn’t enough time, you can record up to a further 30 minutes and upload this separately for an additional cost. See below: How much does it cost?

What happens once I’ve recorded my interview?

The “Record Your Stories” app’s edit screen allows you to make some simple edits to your interview – you can trim the ends and re-record over sections if you want to.

You can also simply press ‘Record New’ in the ‘Audio list’ section and add a completely new track.

How do I listen to my recording?

You can of course listen on your portable device, but you can also access your recording via iTunes:

First, select the “Share/Submit stories” option on the app’s homepage and choose the recording that you’d like to share on with your computer. This converts your files to a usable m4p file.

Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. Click on your device from the left hand menu and then the ‘Apps’ tab. Scroll down to ‘File Sharing’ and you’ll be able to select Record Their Stories from the right hand box. Your recordings are in the ‘Their Stories Documents’ box, and you can now save the appropriate folder to any location on your computer.

How can I upload the audio for professional editing?

What if my recording isn’t good enough?

If you’ve followed all our handy tips on the application we’re pretty sure your recording will be perfect for transforming into a mini documentary. If there’s something wrong and you’re not sure of the problem please send it to us at info@recordtheirstories.com and we’ll try to offer help to solve it for you.

If you’re sending the audio to our gift service we’ll always have a listen first anyway. We are always honest and up-front so if we feel there are any issues we’ll let you know; this way, you can re-record part or all of it again.

We WON’T send you an order form for the gift service if we don’t think the recording is good enough to edit.

Can I pick my own music for the documentary?

We have a wide selection of music available for your documentary and will choose this accordingly to match what’s being said or the mood of the interview. However, if there’s a specific **commercial track or tracks you wish to have added, please let us know when you submit the audio. We can normally accommodate your request but there is an additional cost – see here for charges.

** Commercial music is that which is normally available from shops on CDs, vinyl or download and recorded for general entertainment such as chart songs by solo performers and groups. In some rare cases it may not be possible to gain the necessary rights to enable inclusion.

The Gift Service - What might you cut out and what will you keep?

This is your chance to ‘Record Their Stories’ and we don’t want to significantly change the content or place things out of context. A professional producer will listen through to your interview, make edits to smooth out the flow, and perhaps rearrange sections to give a better sense of continuity. Our real work comes in to play when we add music and illustrative sound effects to enhance and embellish the stories being told.

What if I don’t like what you’ve done with it?

You’re in safe hands. We have a lot of clever and talented people working on this for you. All of us have worked, and still do work, as professionals in some of the world’s best broadcasters. So we’re confident you won’t be disappointed. In the unlikely event there is a specific issue, we’re happy to talk it through and work with you to resolve the matter.

How much does it cost?

The App cost varies according to your country, but is available at a VERY reasonable price to download from Apple’s App-store! This gives you all the tools to build your script and carry out the recording on your device.

The real magic of ‘Record Their Stories’ is our ability to take your recording and apply our professional skills to create a unique audio gift; precious memories set against a backdrop of music and sounds, forming a documentary of someone’s life.

There has to be a price but we hope it’s a reasonable one for something quite priceless. You’re buying the services of our team of professional producers and audio editors and of course the gift CD.

When do I pay?

When you upload your audio, we’ll have a listen and check that the quality is good enough to be edited. Once it’s approved we’ll email you an order form. This is when you pay. We use Paypal which means you can use your Paypal account or credit card. Your uploaded interview generates a special order code so we, and you, can track what’s happening in the production chain.

Our Payment Terms

In order for us to proceed with your order we ask for 100% payment as soon as we’ve checked that the audio quality of your interview is acceptable and we can work with it. We’ll not begin the work until we’ve received full payment.

How do I receive my finished documentary?

When we’ve completed editing and mixing your documentary it’ll be copied to two audio CD’s. One for you and the other for your relative. These will be gift packaged to the address you give us.

Additionally, we can make a copy available for you to download from our website using a special access key which we e-mail to you separately. Please state on your order form if you would like a downloadable copy.

What if I want more copies?

This is easy, just let us know when you first send us your interview or you can order as many copies as you like at a later stage. We keep archive copies of everything.
